The Republic Square in Almaty is a centrally located vast area, along the Satpaev prospect, where most of annual festivities are organized.
This square was founded in 1980 to provide the citizens of Almaty with a place to celebrate holidays such as the New Year, and official holidays. In 1992, after independence, Navruz was celebrated there for the first time.
The square is decorated with a Statue of the Golden Warrior (or Golden Man), a tribute to the nomadic past of the Kazakh people and archaeological finds of Saka and/or Scythian epochs where significant numbers of golden decorations were found.
Now, the Square of Republic is a favorable place of locals to hold festivities, stroll, have romantic encounters, and do some shopping in the underground shopping center (open since 2012).
