Astana is the new capital of Kazakhstan. The new status was assigned to the city in 1997 upon a decision of the first president N. Nazarbaev. The city is naturally divided into two parts, old and new, by the Ishim river. The new part (river's left bank) is now a huge construction site, with numerous skyscrapers, business centers and residential complexes. The old part is the traditional city, better equipped with various amenities and services.
